Styling with Vintage, or is that Styl'n?

Writer's picture: Cathy BumgardnerCathy Bumgardner

So, you just received a vintage gift from your Aunt Betty. Now what???

You like modern, but this piece is kind of cool, so you decide to keep it... hurray!

Let's run down a few questions to help this gift find a home!

  • Is it a certain color that can go well with other colors in your home?

  • Is the piece small, medium, or large?

  • What is its shape and texture?

  • Are the lines curvy or straight on the piece?

  • Is it a decorative or a functional piece?

  • Is it a fragile or easy to move around piece with no problem?

  • Can this piece sit on its own or need support?

This list of questions will help you narrow down the best area of a room for Aunt Betty's gift. If you have a printer, take a picture of the item by itself. This way you can place the picture within the area you may want to use it. Make sure it is cut out to be the same size as the object if possible. Having this picture means you're not having to move other items around and you should see a mock final result. Finally, Aunt Betty's gift is NOT supposed to be the queen of the setting. Rather it is to fit in with the other pieces yet be the 'unexpected item' which catches the eye without you, or your friends, knowing it.

Please leave a comment if you'd like to add a thought, suggest an idea, or add a question related to the list. Thank you! Katie
